Krishi Vigyan Kendra organizes training programme on Millets

REASI, May 4: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi under the aegis of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technologies of Jammu (SKUAST-J) organized the training programme on millets here today at Dasanoo village in Reasi distt. of J&K. Number of women farmers of the area enthuastically participated in the programme.
The programme was organised under the able guidance of Director Extension (DE) of SKUAST-J, Prof.SK Gupta. Dr.Banarsi Lal, Sr. Scientist & Head of KVK, Reasi formally welcomed the participants and briefed the objectives of the programme. He elaborated the health benefits of various types of millets and discussed the ways and means of incorporation of millets in the diet. He urged the participants to cultivate millets and add them to their daily dietary habits.
He spoke on the International Year of Millets-2023 and added that millets are the super food that can help to tackle the challenges of food security. He elaborated the cultivation practices of different types of millets. He asked the participants to work towards increasing the share of nutri-cereals in the national food baskets. He said that millet based value-added products can be a good venture to increase the income of women Self Help Groups (SHGs). He said that millets can be grown in the rainfed conditions with the limited inputs and their cultivation can transform the lives of small and marginal farmers. He also discussed on natural farming to produce the quality food. He spoke in detail on the production, consumption, nutritional security and climate resilience of millets. He narrated that millets like foxtail, finger millet, pearl millet, amaranths etc. can be grown in Reasi distt. and farmers can generate more income and employment by growing them.
Dr.Suja Nabi Qureshi, Scientist highlighted the nutritional value of millets and urged the participants to grow millets of commercial level so as to increase their farm income and add nutritional security. He suggested the farmers for the commercial cultivation of millets for more returns. He said that millets are climate resilient and can be grown under rain fed conditions. He guided farmers on the value addition in millets for more returns. During the programme an interactive session was also organized for the participants during which various quarries regarding the millets were raised by the farmers which were answered satisfactorily by the KVK scientists. Farmers showed keenness during the programme. Organic inputs were also distributed during the programme. During the programme awardee woman farmer of the area, Sunita Devi was also present who thanked KVK, Reasi for organizing such a useful programme. A field visit was also arranged during the programme. The programme was concluded by Dr.Suja Nabi Qureshi with formal vote of thanks.
