PPND Degree college, GDC Ghagwat jointly celebrate World No Tobacco Day

Samba, May 31: NSS, NCC units, and Cultural Committees from Pt Prem Nath Dogra Govt Degree College Samba and Govt Degree College Ghagwal joined forces to celebrate World No Tobacco Day at GDC, Samba. A team of doctors from District Hospital Samba visited the campus to launch an awareness campaign. Dr. Sunil Raina, Consultant Physician, shed light on the importance of the global Anti-Tobacco Campaign. He provided insights into the tobacco industry, from cultivation to its profit-driven global market capture. He also emphasized the severe consequences of drug and tobacco addiction on the physical and mental health of vulnerable teenagers. Dr. Raina suggested various preventive measures to combat this issue in society. To channelize students’ energy towards constructive endeavors, a Poster Making competition on the theme of World No Tobacco Day was organized. Students from both colleges showcased their creativity and received prizes based on merit. The first prize was awarded to Ms. Riya Bharati from GDC Ghagwal, the second prize went to Mr. Deepak Verma from GDC Samba, and the third prize was won by Ms. Archana Devi from GDC Ghagwal.
The cultural celebrations featured a captivating folk dance performance called “Jagran” by students from GDC Ghagwal. NSS volunteers from GDC Samba presented melodious dogri folk melodies. Prof. (Dr.) Twinkle Suri, Principal of the host college, addressed the students and emphasized the theme of World No Tobacco Day, “We Need Food, Not Tobacco.” She highlighted the need for conscious efforts by society and educational institutions to guide the energy of youth towards sports, arts, and other constructive and morally uplifting activities. Prof. Suri congratulated the participants and winners of the competitions and expressed gratitude to the teachers and Principal of GDC Ghagwal for their efforts in ensuring the participation of their students, who mesmerized the audience with their colorful folk dance. Dr. Geeta Lakhotra, NSS Programme Officer at GDC Samba, served as the event’s anchor.
