Retd Judge delivers lectures on Mental Health Act to police personnel | | | Early Times Report SAMBA, May 31: Subash Chander Gupta, Retired District & Sessions Judge, delivered a lecture on the Mental Health Act to Police Personnel and trainees at the Police Technical Training Institute (PTTI) in Vijaypur. Gupta emphasized that the Mental Health Act of 2017 is a significant law that shifts the focus from discrimination and criminalization to acknowledging and upholding the rights of individuals receiving mental health treatment and care. This law grants every Indian citizen the "right to access mental healthcare" and recognizes the autonomy and rights of persons with mental illness. The Act also establishes bodies such as Central and State Review Boards, Rehabilitation Centers, Mental Health Authorities, and NGOs to facilitate the treatment and integration of individuals with mental illness into society. The lecture was organized to raise awareness among police personnel, as directed by the PHQ-J&K, and was highly appreciated by the Principal of PTTI Vijaypur, who thanked Subash Chander Gupta for sharing his valuable insights on the Act. Several police officers were present at the event. |
