Early Times Report
REASI, July 11: The Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) in Reasi, under the supervision of the Directorate of Extension at Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu (SKUAST-J), organized a one-day training program on "Self Help Groups (SHGs) and Women Empowerment" in Akhali Bhutan village. The training program witnessed active participation from numerous rural women in the area. Prof. SK Gupta, the Director of Extension at SKUAST-J, provided valuable guidance for the successful organization of the program.
The primary objective of the training program was to enhance understanding of the key features and functions of Self Help Groups (SHGs). Dr. Banarsi Lal, Senior Scientist & Head of KVK Reasi, commenced the program by warmly welcoming the trainees. He explained the concept of SHGs and discussed the formation and management aspects of these groups as per their by-laws. Dr. Lal emphasized women empowerment and highlighted various income-generating activities that SHGs can engage in to improve their earnings and employment opportunities. He stressed the potential of SHGs in hilly regions and their significant role in empowering rural women by nurturing their entrepreneurial skills. Additionally, he covered topics such as regular savings, record-keeping, interloaning, bank linkages, and repayment ethics. He underscored the importance of homogeneity, regular meetings, and entrepreneurship development for the substantial impact of SHGs.
Dr. Suja Nabi Qureshi, Scientist, provided guidance to the participants on packaging, grading, branding, and marketing of processed agricultural products. He also discussed value addition techniques for seasonal fruits and vegetables, as well as preservation methods to extend their shelf life. The participants had the opportunity to ask queries, which were satisfactorily addressed by the scientists. Notable women farmers, Smt. Jyoti Devi and Smt. Rekha Devi, were also present during the program.
The training program concluded with Dr. Suja Nabi Qureshi delivering a formal vote of thanks to all participants and organizers.
