PDP faces political turmoil, past baggage taking heavy toll

Early Times Report

Srinagar, July 16: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by former J&K Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti is finding itself in political turmoil as it couldn’t make much impact during its tenure from 2015 to 2018.
An analyst while talking to Early Times said, “Efforts of the PDP to get cozy with other regional parties are not also working as these formations are maintaining distance from it.”
He said that a group of leaders from the National Conference opposing the idea of leaving any Lok Sabha seat for the PDP in Kashmir is not a surprising development.
“It’s a known fact that NC leaders are not willing to give PDP any space,” the analyst added. .
He said that PDP is facing problems due to it carrying a heavy baggage of the past.
Pertinently, Mehbooba Mufti became J&K Chief Minister after the sudden demise of her father, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, who had led the party to form a coalition government with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2015. However, the PDP’s three-year regime was marred with criticism and allegations of mismanagement, which significantly overshadowed any tangible achievements by the party.
An observer said, “One of the major challenges faced by the PDP-led government was the deteriorating security situation in Jammu and Kashmir. Frequent outbreaks of violence, terrorist attacks, and unrest persisted throughout their tenure.”
Critics argue that the party’s handling of these security challenges left much to be desired, leading to a loss of confidence among the people. “Additionally, incompetence in providing basic governance and lackluster development initiatives further dented the PDP’s image. Unemployment rates remained high, and issues such as inadequate healthcare facilities, poor infrastructure, and rampant corruption continued to plague the state. These failures have left the PDP struggling to project any positive accomplishments during its time in power,” the observer added.
Reflecting on the current state of affairs, political analysts believe that the loss of public trust in the PDP could have major implications for the party’s future. “Its own leaders have deserted the party and have moved towards greener pastures. The PDP faces an uphill battle to rebuild its credibility among the masses,” he said.
