Fighting Corruption Menace
7/17/2023 11:23:55 PM

Kanka Pandita

One of the important issues on which people give mandate while forming the government is eradication of corruption menace from our society, which unfortunately continues unabated. Counting on accountable governance, public at large expect result oriented appreciable actions at least to have mass awareness against this evil and to exhibit its deterrent effects rather than its punitive results. Addressing this vital issue seriously, that is actively eating our society, needs urgent redressal.
Fighting corruption menace by creating sustained public awareness campaign where not only government need to be involved but people en mass should also play their responsible role for ending up this exercise with greater success. Zero tolerance towards corruption is the need of hour where corruption free environment will reform our country which will built it as a strong vibrant Nation.
Government needs to sensitise its employees continuously and anti corruption departments need to be supported with adequate infrastructure and well trained honest manpower. Stress need be laid on granting adequate judicial powers rather than empowering them with vast administrative jurisdiction. Public servants need to be result oriented and should be made accountable so that people have faith and confidence in the system. At the same time, it need to have proper check and balance on their functioning, so as not to misuse such agencies for settling personal scores and political vendetta. Such credible caretakers must not succumb to undue tactical pressure of their administrators for their petty benefits that not only conveys wrong message to the masses but in turn encourage law breakers. Anti corruption agencies need to realise the seriousness of this malignancy and establish a connect with the people so as to expose this menace at the grass root level and create sufficient knowledge about its consequences especially among the corrupt. Non governmental organizations who work with limited resources strive for creating awareness against corruption, need to be encouraged. Sufficient examples of discouraging such front runners have been seen in the past which only waste public money and conveys the message of inefficient governance.
While combating corruption, it is also important to understand the genesis of corruption, so as to tackle it more specifically rather than holistically.
Corruption in our society is perceived to be financial fraud or economic crime when corruption is actually much more broader term with wide ambit and different ramifications. It ranges from intellectual corruption to physical corruption, to sexual corruption, to moral corruption, to social corruption, to religious corruption, to ethnic corruption and very many types of corruption, all having negative implications on our socio economic development. Basically corruption occurs either by need or by greed and both these causes correlate with the mindset of an individual. It is fundamentally related with moral and ethical values of a person those develop during its upbringing.
Mainly anti corruption measures adopt two way approach in fighting corruption menace. One type is punitive that deals with creating much needed awareness so as follow thumb rule of “ prevention is better than cure “. It creates fear in the mind of corrupt due to horrible consequences of corruption and builds morale against unfair and illegal practices. All actions under this exercise are aimed to produce deterrence that creates sense of discipline and responsibility. This approach is purely educative and propulsive in nature. The other method is punitive that provides punishment after committing the crime. It is reformative that corrects human aberrations and serves lesson for others.
Conclusively, not withstanding anti corruption agencies as tool for victimization, together with the government we need to change our mindset, feel collectively responsible and fight consciously for creating much needed vigilance awareness and encourage anti corruption agencies to fight against this chronic menace in order to rebuilt corrupt free environment.
