KVK promotes millets cultivation

REASI, Aug 6: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi under the administrative control of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technologies of Jammu (SKUAST-J) is promoting and educating farmers on millets cultivation under the dynamic stewardship of Hon'ble Vice Chancellor Prof.BN Tripathi and able guidance of Director Extension (DE) Prof.SK Gupta of SKUAST-J.
Dr.Banarsi Lal, Sr. Scientist & Head of KVK, Reasi said that Reasi district of J&K has huge potential in millets production and millets like pearl millet, foxtail, kodo, barnyard, finger millet etc. can be grown in the distt. He spoke on the International Year of Millets-2023 and said that millets are capable of mitigating both the climatic disorders and ailments associated with the sedentary life. He added that the income of small and marginal farmers can be augmented through the millets as millets are climate friendly and can be grown with less water. He added that farmers should grow millets to mitigate the challenges of nutritional security and generate more farm returns. He narrated that the millets are considered as the superfood with the aim of increasing the production and consumption and also to popularize 'Shree Anna', the mother of all grains to mitigate the malnutrition. He briefed the nutritional aspects, health benefits of various types of millets and discussed the ways and means of incorporation of millets in the diet to mitigate the nutritional requirements. He also spoke on the scientific cultivation of various types of millets and urged the participants to work towards increasing the share of nutri-cereals in the national food baskets. He highlighted the value addition in millets for more farm returns and discussed on the marketing potential and branding of millets. He informed that millets can be produced easily through natural farming by using limited water and other agro-inputs. By observing the benefits of millets, farmers are showing keen interest towards the cultivation of millets.
