PMGKAY providing sustenance to poor

With a commitment to ensuring food security for all, the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) has emerged as a critical initiative, providing sustenance to a staggering 80 crore poor people.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent announcement to extend this free ration scheme for the next five years is a testament to the government’s unwavering dedication to uplifting the nation’s most vulnerable.
PMGKAY, launched in March 2020, was a response to the unforeseen challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. It was a lifeline for millions of Indians who found themselves grappling with food insecurity due to the economic repercussions of the pandemic. The scheme originally provided five kilograms of rice or wheat and one kilogram of pulses per month to each eligible beneficiary. Additionally, for children, it included free mid-day meals, which have been invaluable for the nutrition and education of countless youngsters.
The decision to extend the PMGKAY for five more years is a welcome move, demonstrating the government’s long-term commitment to poverty alleviation. While the pandemic may have been the catalyst for this initiative, its significance transcends the crisis it was designed to address. It signifies the government’s intent to tackle food insecurity, an issue that has plagued the nation for decades, with determination and compassion.
