PMGKAY providing sustenance to poor
11/5/2023 10:50:41 PM

With a commitment to ensuring food security for all, the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) has emerged as a critical initiative, providing sustenance to a staggering 80 crore poor people.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent announcement to extend this free ration scheme for the next five years is a testament to the government’s unwavering dedication to uplifting the nation’s most vulnerable.
PMGKAY, launched in March 2020, was a response to the unforeseen challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. It was a lifeline for millions of Indians who found themselves grappling with food insecurity due to the economic repercussions of the pandemic. The scheme originally provided five kilograms of rice or wheat and one kilogram of pulses per month to each eligible beneficiary. Additionally, for children, it included free mid-day meals, which have been invaluable for the nutrition and education of countless youngsters.
The decision to extend the PMGKAY for five more years is a welcome move, demonstrating the government’s long-term commitment to poverty alleviation. While the pandemic may have been the catalyst for this initiative, its significance transcends the crisis it was designed to address. It signifies the government’s intent to tackle food insecurity, an issue that has plagued the nation for decades, with determination and compassion.
By ensuring that 80 crore poor people receive their monthly rations, PMGKAY has not only mitigated immediate hunger but also helped in improving the overall health and well-being of millions.
Adequate nutrition is the foundation of a thriving society. It is essential for physical and mental development, especially among children. PMGKAY’s extension acknowledges the necessity of securing this foundation for the next generation, fortifying the nation’s prospects for growth and prosperity.
The extension of PMGKAY is a testament to the government’s recognition of the interconnection between food security, poverty reduction, and social stability. Hunger is a potent driver of social unrest and a hindrance to human potential. By ensuring that the poor have access to food, the government is directly addressing the root causes of poverty and social unrest, which can help in building a more stable and equitable society.
Additionally, PMGKAY has a multiplier effect on the economy. By providing free rations, it eases the financial burden on low-income households, enabling them to redirect their limited resources towards other essential needs like education and healthcare. This, in turn, contributes to the overall improvement in the standard of living and productivity of the nation’s marginalized population.
