| Accused sent to 5-day Police remand | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Mar 12: City Judge Jammu Ch Gulam Murtaza on Thursday remanded the accused in the alleged firing incident targeting National Conference president and former Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah to five days of police custody for sustained interrogation.
The accused, identified as Kamal Singh Jamwal, son of late Ajit Singh and a resident of Purani Mandi, Jammu, was produced before the court of Ch Gulam Murtaza after his arrest in connection with FIR No. 29/2026 registered at Police Station Gangyal, Jammu under Section 109 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 3/25 of the Arms Act.
According to the remand order passed by City Judge/JMIC Jammu Ch Gulam Murtaza, the Investigating Officer sought five days’ police remand, stating that the investigation was at a crucial stage and more evidence was required to be collected to reach a logical conclusion. Police submitted that custodial interrogation of the accused was necessary to ascertain the motive behind the act and to verify whether he had any links with any individual or organisation.
During the proceedings, counsel for the accused submitted that Jamwal is a senior citizen and suffers from fluctuating blood pressure, seeking proper medical examination in accordance with the prescribed protocol. Taking note of the submission, Judge Ch Gulam Murtaza directed that the accused be medically examined after every 24 hours during the remand period.
After perusal of the case diary and material placed on record, the court observed that the investigation was still in progress and that the offences invoked were serious and non-bailable in nature. Court, therefore, allowed police remand for five days from March 12 to March 16, 2026.
The court further directed the Investigating Officer to strictly comply with the guidelines laid down by the Supreme Court in D.K. Basu Vs State of West Bengal and to produce the accused again before the competent Magistrate on March 16 for further remand or appropriate orders.
The accused was produced in court amid tight security arrangements as the case has attracted widespread attention following the reported firing incident involving Dr Farooq Abdullah. |
