SOTTO presents organ donation awareness programme

JAMMU, Feb 3: J&K State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (SOTTO) presented Human Organ Awareness Programme at 166 Military Hospital Satwari today on Feb 03 to sensitize medical personnel of the hospital including field staff and families of army persons about the importance of donating organs/tissues to those in need posthumously.
Dr. Elias Sharma, HoD Urology & Kidney Transplant SSH Jammu and Nodal Officer SOTTO explained the procedure involved in Human Organ Donation with legal implications. He said that the human body was not a commodity, to be bought or sold, It is purely an altruistic act of donation of organs and tissues.
Dr. Sanjeev Puri, Joint Director, SOTTO provided insights into the National Organ Transplant Programme (NOTP) under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare. He assured support from SOTTO J&K to encourage Military Hospital Satwari to start Organ Retrieval Centre and Cornea Retrieval Centre in this hospital.
Anshu Sharma, Consultant (IEC/Media), SOTTO encouraged the audience to actively participate in the organ donation pledge drive under Ayushman Bhav.
Irfan Ahmed, Transplant Coordinator at SOTTO, elucidated the sequence of events during cadaveric organ donation in a hospital.
Col. Awanish Karan, Officiating Commandant thanked SOTTO J&K for the awareness campaign which is the need of the hour. It is important to dispel certain myths to encourage masses to come forward for pledge.
Lt. Col Ajay Shankar Sharma encouraged the audience for pledging for donation, a noble cause.
