JAMMU, July 11: The Jammu and Kashmir National Conference today paid glowing tributes to Madr-e-Meharban Begum Akbar Jehan Abdullah on her 24th death anniversary during a programme held at Sher-e-Kashmir Bhawan, Jammu.
On the occasion, Ajay Sadhotra, Additional General Secretary and former minister J&K National Conference, Rattan Lal Gupta, Provincial President, and Sheikh Bashir Ahmed, Provincial Secretary Jammu, Babu Rampaul Central Zone President and former minister along with party leaders and workers, paid glowing tributes to Madr-e-Meharban.
Today's programme was organized by Bimla Luthra, State Vice President of the JKNC Women Wing and former MLA, to commemorate the death anniversary of Madr-e-Meharban. Earlier Mr G.H Malik organized Quran Khawani on this occasion.
A two-minute silence was observed as a mark of respect to the memory of Madr-e-Meharban.
Speaking on the occasion, Ajay Sadhotra criticized the current government for its failure to empower women in Jammu and Kashmir. He accused the BJP government at the Centre and the Union Territory Administration of providing nothing but lip service, leaving the women of J&K neglected and underserved.
Sadhotra emphasized that despite promises and rhetoric, the present regime has not implemented any substantial measures to improve the status or welfare of women in the region. He called for immediate and effective action to address the issues faced by women, highlighting their continued struggles and the need for genuine support and empowerment.
Rattan Lal Gupta, Provincial President in his address, recalled the role of Madr-e-Meharban as a conscience-keeper of the party during the political struggle of Jammu and Kashmir, particularly after the arrest of Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah. He said she led the National Conference at a very crucial juncture of the political evolution of Jammu and Kashmir when Baba-e-Quom was in prison. He emphasized that Madr-e-Meharban proved to be an affectionate mother, a dynamic leader, and a great human being who had a deep concern for the welfare and well-being of the people. He stated that Begum Sahiba will always remain an inspiration for the women of the state who want to play an equal role in socio-economic transformation.
Rattan Lal Gupta also highlighted that during the regime of the NC government, 50 percent of MBBS seats in J&K were reserved for women students, contrasting this with the current administration's empty promises. He asserted that NC is the sole guarantor of the welfare of the masses and that if given the opportunity to return to power, the party would resolve the people's problems effectively.
Gupta strongly condemned the high hindrances of the JP company's employees who attacked Chairperson Kishtwar Pooja Thakur. While she was heading the population of land losers to resolve their issues with the company.
Gupta said that such high hindrances is unacceptable and demanded stern action should be taken those who have attacked the Chairperson Pooja Thakur and such employees terminated from the company and FIR should be launched against them immediately.
Babu Rampal, senior NC leader urged the people of Jammu and Kashmir to support the National Conference leadership in the upcoming polls, stating that it is time to strengthen the hands of Dr Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah to form a government that is people-centric and considerate towards the problems of the common man.
Bimla Luthra recalled the contribution of Begum Sahiba to women's emancipation and empowerment and said the best tribute to her would be to concentrate on improving the status of women and ensuring their dignity at all costs.
The former MLA called for the implementation of political reservation for women in the upcoming Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir. By doing so, she believed it would further the cause of women's rights and participation in governance, paving the way for a more inclusive and equitable society where women's voices are heard and respected.
NC leaders Sheikh Bashir Ahmed Provincial Secretary Jammu and Dr. Shamshad Shan DDC Chairperson Ramban strongly criticized the incumbent Govt for its failure on all fronts. They said that benefits of Government schemes are not reaching the deserving poor womenfolk due to corruption and nepotism prevalent at all levels and the government is wholly and solely responsible for this sordid state of affairs in the Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory.
