KATHUA, Sept 9: Government Degree College (GDC), Kathua successfully concluded a series of events under the Systematic Voters' Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) program. The activities aimed to promote electoral awareness among students, especially first-time voters, ahead of the upcoming J&K Legislative Assembly Elections in 2024.
The event began with a welcome address by Prof. Shivani Kotwal, Convener of the Literary Committee, who outlined the various SVEEP activities. The chief guest, Prof. Seema Mir, Principal of GDC Kathua, applauded the efforts of the committee and students, urging the youth to actively participate in the democratic process.
Day 1 featured a symposium, judged by Dr. Eva Sharma and Dr. Nitasha Baloria, where students debated electoral participation. Shivika Rajput won first place, followed by Kanika and Sneha Sharma. A pledge ceremony for unbiased voting, led by Prof. Seema Mir, followed.
Day 2 saw a Poetry Recitation and Painting Competition, judged by Dr. Yash Paul Sharma, Dr. Jagmohan Sharma, and Prof. Rakhi Malhotra. Sneha won the painting competition, with Rekha and Nitika Sharma securing second and third places. In poetry, Kanika stood first, followed by Tania and Shivika.
Day 3 culminated in a signature campaign to emphasize voting rights, with active participation from students and faculty under the guidance of Prof. Seema Mir. The campaign involved senior staff members, including Prof. R.K Pandita and Prof. Sanjay Karlupia, and aimed to make new voters aware of the consequences of neglecting their voting rights.
The valedictory function featured cultural performances and a skit depicting the significance of voting and how every vote shapes the nation's future. The program ended with a vote of thanks by Dr. Yashpal Sharma, HOD Urdu, and the winners were felicitated by the Principal and senior faculty members.
Hosted by Vishal, a Semester-5 student, the event successfully highlighted the importance of voting and aimed to encourage greater youth participation in the upcoming elections.
