GDC Udhampur celebrates Gandhi Jayanti

UDHAMPUR, Sept 25: In celebration of Gandhi Jayanti, Government Degree College (GDC) Udhampur organized a series of intracollegiate events to shortlist participants for upcoming intercollege competitions at the district level. The events, held today, were marked by enthusiastic student participation and highlighted the values of truth, non-violence, and sustainability that Mahatma Gandhi advocated. The day began with a Bhajan Singing Competition organized by the Cultural Committee and the Department of Music. Sixteen students participated, with Laksh Dogra of Semester 5th securing the 1st position. The competition was judged by esteemed faculty members Prof. Samosh Kumar and Prof. Pooja from the Department of Music. Next in line was the Essay Writing Competition on the topic "Relevance of Gandhian Thought in Modern Society." Six students showcased their writing skills, with Anjali Sambyak of Semester 5th winning the first position, followed by Moseena of Semester 3rd in second place. The series continued with a Seminar on "Gandhiji's Vision for a Sustainable Future," held in the Department of Chemistry. Eighteen students participated, with Akhil Brahmanu of Semester 5th and Parshotam of Semester 5th securing the first and second positions, respectively.
In addition to these intellectual events, a Cleanliness Drive was organized by NSS Program Officers, Prof. Gurpreet Kour and Prof. Sanjit Singh, as part of the college's ongoing efforts to promote Gandhian principles of cleanliness and community service.
Following this, a Slogan Writing Competition on the theme "Truth and Non-Violence" was held in the Zoology Department. Twenty students from various streams participated, and the competition was judged by Prof. Babu Lal Thakur (HoD Education), Dr. Mohinder Pal (HoD Statistics), and Prof. Shobna Sambyal (HoD Zoology). Moseena of Semester 3rd, Anjali of Semester 5th, and Rupali of Semester 3rd were declared the first, second, and third winners, respectively, with the judges commending all participants for their creative efforts.
Principal Dr. Sanjay Verma congratulated the students on their achievements and extended his best wishes to those advancing to the next round of competitions. He also emphasized the importance of such events in instilling a sense of responsibility and active participation in creating a cleaner and better society.
