Early Times Report
JAMMU, Sept 25: The Women Development Cell (WDC) and the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of GDC Sidhra organized a one-day workshop focusing on the Three New Criminal Laws and the Protection of Children's Rights Against the Production, Distribution, and Consumption of Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM).
The workshop featured Advocate Kiran Thakur, a well-known legal expert and founder of the legal awareness initiative DHIRA: The Undistracted Mind, as the resource person. Dr. Anu Sharma, Convenor of the WDC, formally welcomed Advocate Thakur and introduced her to the attending students and faculty members.
In her presentation, Advocate Thakur explained the three new criminal laws recently introduced in India, with a special focus on the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the new criminal code that replaced the Indian Penal Code (IPC) on 1 July 2024. She highlighted the various changes in the BNS, including the addition of 20 new offenses and the removal of 19 provisions from the IPC.
Advocate Thakur provided insights into how these new laws will impact the handling of child abuse cases, discussing key legal provisions and protections for victims. She gave practical guidance on how to seek help and legal recourse, mentioning important sections of the BNS such as Sections 69, 95, 63, and 64. She also familiarized attendees with the concepts of Zero FIR, Electronic FIR, and the Emergency Number 112 for assistance in emergencies.
The workshop featured an interactive session where students engaged with Advocate Thakur, asking questions and seeking clarification on various legal issues.
Principal Dr. G S Rakwal emphasized the importance of such workshops in raising awareness about citizens' rights and protections. He praised the organizers for their efforts in making the event a success.
The workshop was coordinated by Dr. Anu Sharma, Convenor of the WDC, and Dr. Anshu Gupta, Convenor of the IQAC, with active support from Dr. Harpreet Kour (HoD Political Science) and Dr. Mussarat Chowdhary (HoD Economics), along with other WDC members. The event saw participation from 50 students and faculty members. The program concluded with a formal vote of thanks by Dr. Anu Sharma.
