Early Times Report

ANANTNAG, Oct 22: The Secretary, District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) Anantnag today inaugurated a week-long sports event at District Jail Anantnag in collaboration with the Department of Youth Services and Sports.
This initiative, which commenced today and is scheduled to culminate on 30th October 2024, is designed to promote a spirit of competition, teamwork, and overall well-being among the inmates, offering them an opportunity to engage in meaningful physical activities during their time in custody.
In his address at the inaugural function, Secretary DLSA emphasized the significant role sports can play in the rehabilitation process of inmates.
He underscored how such events can help to alleviate the psychological stress and emotional strain.
By encouraging physical activity, the initiative seeks to build a more positive and healthy environment within the jail, while also helping inmates develop discipline and confidence, the qualities that are essential for their reintegration into society post-release, he said.
The event includes a variety of sports such as football, volleyball, and athletics, all aimed at engaging the inmates in healthy competition while promoting a sense of normalcy and routine.
The DYS&SO Anantnag acknowledged the efforts of the Department of Youth Services and Sports for their collaboration and extended his gratitude to the jail authorities for facilitating the event.
He expressed his belief that such events are crucial in helping inmates acquire skills, develop character, and maintain physical fitness, which can be invaluable when they eventually return to society.
