Jammu, Jan 29: Despite growing demands from all major political parties, the J&K unit of BJP has advised the Union Government to exercise caution regarding the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.
The J&K BJP believes that instead of making a hasty decision, the Centre must wait for the right time before taking any concrete steps toward granting statehood.
The demand for restoring Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood has been echoed by almost all political parties, including the National Conference (NC), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the Congress, and even some regional parties and
independent leaders.
Political parties argue that reverting J&K to full statehood is essential for restoring democratic processes, addressing governance issues, and ensuring a sense of political stability in the region.
However, the BJP’s stance reflects a more cautious approach, prioritizing security, administrative preparedness, and the long-term stability of the Union Territory.
Notable during the first session of the Legislative Assembly, Leader of the Opposition Sunil Sharma cautioned that “undemocratic and unconstitutional” action of the ruling party would create hurdles in the restoration of statehood.

According to party leaders, the Centre must ensure that all necessary security and administrative mechanisms are in place before taking such a significant step. They argue that hasty action could disrupt the progress achieved in terms of law and order and development after the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019.
A key concern raised by the BJP is the ongoing security situation in Jammu and Kashmir. While the region has witnessed a decline in terrorist activities and separatist sentiments over the past few years, sporadic incidents still occur. The BJP believes that premature statehood could be exploited by anti-national elements, leading to political instability and security challenges. Ensuring that such threats are minimized before granting statehood remains a primary concern for the party.
Moreover, the BJP has pointed out the need for further administrative and infrastructural strengthening before statehood is restored. The Union Territory status, they argue, has allowed the central government to directly oversee development projects, streamline governance, and ensure transparency. They believe that a premature transition to statehood could disrupt this progress and reintroduce political instability.
