SKUAST-J organizes Farmer Awareness Programme

JAMMU, Feb 5: Agrometeorology Section, SKUAST-J under the aegis of Dr. B.N.Tripathi, Hon?ble Vice Chancellor and guidance of Prof. S.K. Gupta, Director Research, SKUAST-Jammu organized One day "Farmer awareness cum Plant distribution programme" at village Kalri, Block- Bhalwal, Jammu under NICRA-AICRPAM on 05th February, 2025 under SC-SP of NICRA-AICRPAM. The main objective of this programme was to minimize the adverse effect of climate change and also improve the socio-economic status of the small and marginal farmers of this community by planting fruit plants to the SCs & STs farmers for raising income. In this programme more than 150 farmers (male and female) participated
Dr. Mahender Singh, Chief Scientist and PI of NICRA-AICRPAM informed the farmers about the about increase in the temperature and its effect on rabi crops and also brief to develop human resource through specifically providing adequate agricultural education to the farmers. He also emphasized the use of weather and climate based agro-advisories issued biweekly under NICRA-AICRPAM and stressed upon the farmers to make more and more utilization in order to save the input cost of various crops by adopting forecasting rendered by Agrometeorology Section, SKUAST-J, Chatha.
Dr. Vikas Tandon, Dean, Faculty of Horticulture & Forestry, was Chief Guest on the occasion. He apprised the farmers about various activities undertaken by the University for the welfare of the farmers for boosting their income from agriculture enterprises and also encouraged the farmers to take more and more participation in such type of programme and importance of plantation of fruit plants in the area. He emphasized the farmer community to come forward regarding their agricultural related problems and informed that the Advance Centre of Horticulture also prepare and provided the quality planting with latest technology . He also distributed 450 fruit plants (Gauva, Kinnow & Mousami) to the farmers.
Dr. Parshant Bakshi, Prof. & Head, Division of Fruit Science emphasized on adoption of new technologies of fruit cultivation under changing climate scenario. He further emphasized on optimum use of waste water for raising vegetable kitchen garden and procedure of plantation of fruits plant in order to minimize the mortality of plant in different seasons. Dr. Deepak Kumar Srivastva, Professor, Plant Pathology briefed the farmers about the role of weather factors on disease development and their management in agriculture, horticulture and vegetable crops during these days. He also explained farmers to go for seed treatment before sowing of rabi crops with suitable fungicide in order to save the crop from seed borne disease for enhance agriculture productivity.
Dr. Veena Sharma, Technical Officer, Chatha highlighted about soil and water conservation practices to achieve optimal nutrient use efficiency in crop yields, crop quality and economic returns. Dr. Rohit Sharma, Technical Officer, Rajouri gave information on importance of Agromet Advisory services in day today agriculture activities. He motivated the farmers to make maximum use of Meghdoot, Mausam and Damini mobile apps for timely and effective AABs.
Suresh Kumar, FCLA and Doordarshani Handoo registered the farmers for this event and Mr. Dharamvir, AO, Jaskaran, M.Sc. student, Janak Raj and Arvinder Singh Agrometeorology Section also participated in the programme in management activity.
