CM Omar meets Congress MLAs
May offer Deputy Speaker’s post to grand old party
3/6/2025 11:45:59 PM

Early Times Report

Jammu, Mar 6: Amid reports that Congress MLAs will corner the National Conference-led government on unfulfilled promises, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday met with all the six MLAs of the grand old party to keep them in good humour to ensure smooth functioning of the ongoing budget session of the Assembly.
Although both parties sought to downplay the meeting, sources said that the ruling National Conference is seriously thinking of offering the Deputy Speaker’s post to its coalition partner Congress, which has six members in the Assembly.
Chief Minister's meeting with all the six Congress MLAs amidst the budget session fueled speculation of offering something to Congress.
“Although there is no official statement issued by the ruling National Conference regarding offering the Deputy Speaker’s post to the party, discussion on this issue has been going on”, a senior Congress leader told The Early Times.
Wishing anonymity, the leader said that the ruling National Conference is not going to give any message of its proximity with the BJP by offering the Deputy Speaker’s post to the Saffron Party.
Important to mention here that the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) and Peoples Conference have charged the ruling National Conference with having an understanding with the BJP.
As reported earlier, the NC-led government, which took office on October 16, 2024, has yet to announce the name of the Deputy Speaker.
“The Deputy Speaker’s position is crucial for the smooth functioning of the Assembly. It is a well-established precedent that the post goes to the principal opposition party, and since the BJP holds that position, we expect the government to make the appointment without further delay,” a senior BJP leader recently told Early Times on condition of anonymity.
Despite mounting pressure, the Omar Abdullah government has not issued any official statement regarding the delay. Political analysts believe the ruling party is carefully considering its options, given the complex political landscape of Jammu and Kashmir.
After meeting with Congress leaders Chief Minister Omar Abdullah shared a picture on his official social media account.
“Had a productive discussion with Congress leaders on key issues and our shared vision for progress. Collaboration is key to building a stronger, more inclusive Jammu and Kashmir”, the Chief Minister posted.
