CRPF As Backbone
4/18/2025 10:40:43 PM

In the relentless pursuit of internal security, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has emerged as the undisputed backbone in India’s mission to eliminate Naxalism—a decades-long menace that has stifled development, disrupted governance, and cost innumerable lives. Today, thanks to the tireless efforts of the CRPF and its elite Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA), Naxalism has been effectively contained to just four districts in the country—a remarkable achievement that reflects both operational excellence and strategic coordination.
At the heart of this success lies the CoBRA battalion, a specialised force carved out of the CRPF to take on asymmetric warfare in some of the most hostile terrains of India.
Trained rigorously in guerrilla tactics, jungle survival, and close-quarters combat, CoBRA commandos are specifically designed to neutralize Naxal threats deep within forested red corridors. These commandos have not only demonstrated exceptional courage in numerous encounters but have also shown remarkable restraint, precision, and discipline—hallmarks of a professional force.
The containment of Naxalism to a handful of districts is not a coincidence but the result of years of coordinated intelligence-based operations, infrastructure development, and community outreach programs facilitated by the CRPF.
By dominating strategic zones and disrupting Naxalite supply chains, the force has dismantled their strongholds, thereby restoring a sense of security and stability in once-troubled regions. In fact, the presence of CRPF personnel in remote and difficult areas has enabled local administrations to resume governance, build schools, healthcare centres, and implement welfare schemes.
The CRPF’s success in Naxal-affected areas has now inspired its expansion into other conflict zones. The Director General of CRPF recently announced that a CoBRA battalion will soon be raised in Jammu and Kashmir to conduct anti-terror operations. This is a significant development, given CoBRA’s track record in executing high-risk missions in complex terrains.
Their deployment in J&K is expected to bolster existing counter-insurgency measures and serve as a deterrent to terror outfits operating in the region.
What sets the CRPF apart is not just its tactical prowess but also its commitment to upholding the ethos of a people-friendly force. While eliminating armed threats, the CRPF has also engaged with local communities to build trust, counter propaganda, and create a security environment conducive to development. The force’s humanitarian outreach has been pivotal in winning hearts and minds, an essential aspect of any long-term counterinsurgency strategy.
As the country inches closer to its goal of a Naxalism-free nation, the contribution of the CRPF and its CoBRA units must be recognised and celebrated. Their bravery, sacrifices, and operational brilliance have not only brought peace to violence-hit regions but have also reaffirmed the state’s resolve to protect its people from internal threats.
