Indus Waters Treaty to remain suspended despite ceasefire | All decisions taken in a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security on April 23 are to remain fully active, unaffected | | Early Times Report
Jammu, May 10: Despite the announcement of a ceasefire with Pakistan after three days of conflict, the Union Government has made it clear that the decision taken in the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) on April 23, will remain effective. All decisions taken by the CCS remain fully active and unaffected. The ceasefire was initiated at Pakistan's request, with the Pakistani DGMO explicitly stating that Pakistan would refrain from further strikes. This followed decisive Indian strikes on Pakistani airbases, which marked the final military actions prior to the ceasefire agreement. The ceasefire was accepted under significant international pressure, notably from the United States, which tied a provisional $1 billion IMF loan release to Pakistan's immediate acceptance of the ceasefire, with the balance contingent on sustained compliance. India’s strategic posture remains unwavering. The suspension of the Indus Water Treaty, as decided by the CCS, will continue without alteration. India will not share any information with Pakistan regarding water management and will proceed with planned water projects on the three northern rivers, in line with national interests. Furthermore, the United States has acknowledged India’s revised war doctrine, which classifies any future terror attack as an act of war. This shift underscores India’s zero-tolerance policy toward terrorism and reinforces its commitment to national security. The Government of India reaffirms that the ceasefire does not dilute the CCS decisions of April 23, 2025. All measures will be implemented with full resolve to ensure the sovereignty and security of the nation. On April 25, the CCS had decided that the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960 will be held in abeyance with immediate effect, until Pakistan credibly and irrevocably abjures its support for cross-border terrorism. It was also decided that the Integrated Check Post Attari will be closed with immediate effect. It was also decided that Pakistani nationals will not be permitted to travel to India under the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme (SVES) visas. Any SVES visas issued in the past to Pakistani nationals are deemed cancelled. Any Pakistani national currently in India under an SVES visa has 48 hours to leave India. It was also decided that the Defence/Military, Naval, and Air Advisors in the Pakistani High Commission in New Delhi would be declared Persona Non Grata. |
