Jammu, May 11: India has firmly ruled out any third-party mediation on the so-called Kashmir issue, reiterating that the only unresolved matter is the return of Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK), sources confirmed on Sunday. The Indian government expressed strong displeasure over a social media post by US President Donald Trump, who offered to mediate between India and Pakistan to resolve the Kashmir dispute, a move that has sparked diplomatic tensions. According to government sources, New Delhi has made it unequivocally clear that Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India, and the only issue pending with Pakistan is the return of territories illegally occupied by Islamabad. “There is no scope for mediation on Kashmir. The only matter left is the return of Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir and the handing over of terrorists hiding in Pakistan,” a senior official stated, emphasizing India’s long-standing position against external involvement in bilateral issues. The controversy erupted after President Trump posted on Truth Social, claiming tha “There is no scope for mediation on Kashmir. The only matter left is the return of Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir and the handing over of terrorists hiding in Pakistan,” the United States had facilitated a ceasefire between India and Pakistan and offered to work with both nations to find a solution to the Kashmir issue. “I will work with you both to see if, after a ‘thousand years,’ a solution can be arrived at concerning Kashmir,” Trump wrote, crediting US mediation for the ceasefire agreement announced on Saturday. However, India swiftly refuted claims of US involvement, asserting that the ceasefire was negotiated directly through talks between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of both countries. Sources revealed that India was particularly upset by Trump’s mention of Kashmir, viewing it as an attempt to internationalize a bilateral issue. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, addressing the media, clarified, “Pakistan’s DGMO initiated the call to our DGMO on Saturday afternoon. It was agreed that both sides would stop all firing and military action from 5:00 pm IST. No third party was involved.” Misri’s statement underscored India’s stance that the ceasefire was a direct bilateral arrangement, dismissing any notion of US mediation. |
