Jammu grapples with serious water crisis: Tony
6/2/2025 10:49:22 PM
Early Times Report
JAMMU, June 2: Senior Congress leader and District Development Council (DDC) Member Suchetgarh, Taranjit Singh Tony, today expressed deep concern over the growing water crisis in Jammu city, particularly in the Rajiv Nagar area.
Accompanied by officials from the Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department, Tony undertook an extensive tour of Rajiv Nagar to assess the situation on the ground. Prominent among those who were presented included Gagan Panch , Raju Sarpanch, Harvinder Kour, Ramji, Capt Ghar Singh, Jitendra Chib, Happy Randhawa, and Bunty Choudhary.
During the visit, the people of the area apprised the visiting Congress leader that the Kiryani Talab tubewell-a key source for the area-has yet to see the installation of a water lifting motor, leaving thousands of residents at the mercy of erratic water supply amid soaring summer temperatures.
Calling the situation "alarming" and "completely avoidable," Tony strongly appealed to the PHE Minister to expedite the digging and operationalization of new tubewells under various government schemes. "We are only at the beginning of what is expected to be an extremely hot summer, and already the people of Jammu are suffering. The government must treat this as a top priority," he said.
Tony urged the department to accelerate the installation of water lifting motors and ensure timely maintenance of existing infrastructure to avoid further distress. He emphasized that access to clean and sufficient drinking water is a basic human right and must not be compromised under any circumstances.
He also highlighted the urgent need for coordination between departments and warned that continued delays will only deepen the crisis. "The voice of the people cannot go unheard. The administration must wake up before the situation turns into a full-blown emergency," he added.
In addition to immediate relief measures, Tony also stressed the urgent need to conserve and revive local water bodies, many of which have been neglected or encroached upon over time. "Our natural water sources must be protected-not just for today but for the future," he said.
Looking ahead to the upcoming monsoon season, the senior Congress leader called for a massive tree plantation drive to aid in water retention and environmental balance. "Planting trees today will help recharge our groundwater tomorrow. It's time we act with both urgency and foresight," he added.
Tony reaffirmed his commitment to standing with the residents and pledged to keep raising the issue at every platform until sustainable solutions are implemented.
