Hydroponic Ganja becomes new weapon of narco-terror in J&K | Narco terrorists are using air routes to smuggle this high-potency hybrid cannabis. | | Atul Sharma Early Times Report
Jammu, July 23: A sharp rise in the smuggling of high-potency hybrid cannabis, commonly referred to as hydroponic Ganja, from Thailand to India via air routes has raised alarms among Indian authorities. In the first five months of 2025, Drug Law Enforcement Agencies (DLEAs) seized over 373 kilograms of this illicit substance, leading to 56 registered cases and the arrest of 77 traffickers, according to official data presented in Parliament. In response to a parliamentary query regarding the escalating smuggling and distribution of hydroponic ganja across India, Minister of State for Home Affairs, Nityanand Rai, confirmed that air routes have become the primary conduit for this illegal trade. “International couriers and parcels originating from Thailand have been intercepted, with significant quantities of hydroponic ganja seized by our agencies,” Rai stated during the session. The minister revealed that the smuggling operations typically involve human carriers on commercial flights from Thailand, as well as courier parcels used to transport the contraband. The potency of hydroponic ganja, which is cultivated under controlled conditions to yield higher THC levels, makes it a lucrative commodity for traffickers, posing a significant challenge to law enforcement. The surge in hydroponic Ganja smuggling reflects the evolving tactics of international drug cartels, which are increasingly leveraging air routes to bypass traditional border checks. The high potency and compact nature of hydroponic Ganja make it particularly attractive for smugglers, as smaller quantities yield higher profits compared to conventional cannabis. Law enforcement officials note that the use of courier services and human carriers complicates detection efforts, as traffickers blend illicit shipments with legitimate cargo. The seizures in 2025 highlight the scale of the challenge, with the 373 kilograms confiscated representing only a fraction of the suspected volume entering the country. India has taken proactive steps to address this growing menace. During a bilateral meeting with Thai authorities in Bangkok from May 27 to 29, 2025, Indian officials raised concerns about the trafficking network and sought enhanced cooperation to curb the flow of narcotics. The discussions underscored the need for stronger intelligence-sharing and joint operations to dismantle cross-border smuggling syndicates. To bolster its domestic response, the Government of India has implemented a multi-pronged strategy to combat drug trafficking. A four-tier coordination mechanism has been established to streamline collaboration between Central and State DLEAs, ensuring a unified approach to tackling drug-related crimes. Every state has formed a dedicated ANTF to focus on narcotics enforcement, enabling localized and rapid responses to trafficking activities. Chaired by the Director General of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), this committee oversees major seizure cases, ensuring effective follow-up and prosecution. Coordinated efforts involving the Indian Navy, Coast Guard, Border Security Force, State ANTFs, and other agencies have intensified border surveillance and interception operations. DLEAs are undergoing specialized training programs to enhance their skills in detecting and combating sophisticated smuggling techniques. A dedicated helpline has been launched to encourage public reporting of drug-related activities, fostering community participation in the fight against narcotics. |
