River Jhelum crosses flood alert mark in Srinagar | | | Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Aug 27: Authorities in Kashmir today sounded flood alert after water levels in river Jhelum at Ram Munshi Bagh, Srinagar, crossed the danger mark following two days of incessant rains. Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Anshul Garg, said field teams have been deployed to monitor the situation round-the-clock, and contingency plans are in place. People are advised to remain cautious and avoid venturing near water bodies, he cautioned. While the water level of Jhelum has started receding at Sangam in south Kashmir, independent weather forecasters have warned that levels are likely to rise further in Srinagar until evening before gradually decreasing. The Valley, especially south Kashmir, has been battered by unprecedented rainfall since Monday, triggering flash floods in several districts. The southern districts have been worst hit, with large swathes of residential areas inundated. Authorities are maintaining that the situation is being closely monitored and necessary measures are being taken to ensure the safety of people in vulnerable areas. The Internet and mobile calling services, which had been completely snapped yesterday following extensive damage to optical fibre cables along the Srinagar Jammu highway, were partially restored today. The Jammu region has borne the brunt of the disaster, where multiple incidents of flash floods and landslides have left several people dead. |
