Sanjay Pandita Early Times Report
Jammu, Sept 11: Following the devastating floods and incessant rains that struck the Jammu region in the last week of August, several areas are now experiencing alarming incidents of land sinking. These occurrences have led to the collapse of structures, displacement of residents, and widespread concern among the local population. The phenomenon of land subsidence has been reported in multiple districts including Poonch, Jammu, Kathua, Ramban, Doda, Rajouri, and Udhampur. In Kalaban village, located in the Mendhar sector of Poonch district, significant land sinking has resulted in the destruction of over 30 structures, including residential houses, two government schools, a mosque, and a graveyard. Approximately 70 families have been displaced due to this disaster. The Tanger area of Ramban also witnessed a nearly four-kilometer stretch of land sinking, causing cracks in at least 24 houses and raising concerns about the stability of the region. In Panjnara village, located in the Kotranka sub-division of Rajouri, heavy rains led to land sinking over a nearly two-square-kilometer area, resulting in the evacuation of 20 families whose homes developed cracks. Many houses in Bantalab area of Jammu district have developed cracks due to sinking of land. In response to these incidents, authorities have mobilized teams of experts, including geologists and engineers, to assess the situation. Their primary objective is to determine the underlying causes of the land sinking, which may include factors such as soil erosion, groundwater depletion, and the impact of prolonged heavy rainfall. A senior official stated, “The safety of residents and the integrity of infrastructure are our top priorities. Expert teams will conduct thorough investigations to identify the causes and recommend appropriate remedial measures.” The affected communities are grappling with the immediate challenges of displacement and loss of property. In Kalaban village, residents have expressed fears of further land sinking, leading to increased anxiety and uncertainty about the future. Local authorities are working to provide temporary shelters and essential services to the displaced families. Experts have emphasized the need for long-term solutions to mitigate the risks of land subsidence in the region. Recommendations include sustainable land use planning, reforestation efforts, and strengthening of infrastructure to withstand extreme weather events. As investigations continue, authorities are committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of the residents in the affected areas, with plans for rehabilitation and reconstruction once the causes of the land sinking are determined. |
