Amid tension, agitating Ladakhi leaders reach Delhi for today’s preliminary meeting with MHA | | | Sandeep Bhat Early Times Report
Jammu, Sept 29: Amid ongoing tension in Ladakh, leaders of the agitating groups reached New Delhi on Sunday evening for a preliminary dialogue with the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), scheduled for Monday, September 29. Earlier, the talks were slated for September 27 and 28, but members of the Leh Apex Body (LAB) sought a postponement as they had to attend the funerals of those who lost their lives in Wednesday’s violence in Leh. Four people lost their lives in Wednesday’s violence that broke out during a bandh call given by the youth wings of different social groups of Leh. The rescheduled meeting will now be attended by three representatives, each from the LAB and the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), along with the Ladakh MP. Sources said that leaders of the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) have reached New Delhi for tomorrow’s meeting, and leaders of the Leh Apex Body will reach on early Monday morning. “Before the preliminary meeting with the officials of the Ministry of Home Affairs, agitating Ladakhi leaders would sit together and set an agenda for the talks”, reports said. As reported earlier, following Wednesday’s violent protests in Leh, a meeting was held between members of the Apex Committee and MHA representatives who had flown to Leh on Thursday. It was agreed that a preparatory round with the Home Ministry would take place in New Delhi on September 27 or 28, subject to confirmation from the MHA. However, the meeting was deferred in view of the funeral ceremonies. According to sources, following the preparatory discussions on Monday, another meeting will be held within a day or two to finalize arrangements for the High-Powered Committee meeting scheduled for October 6. “The preparatory meeting shall be followed by an immediate official meeting of the Home Ministry with the High-Powered Committee, comprising seven members each from the LAB and the KDA, on a four-point agenda,” a joint statement issued on Thursday by LAB leaders Thupstan Chhewang and Chering Dorjay said. Although the statement did not outline the four-point agenda, the key demands remain statehood for Ladakh, inclusion under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, and allocation of two parliamentary seats for the Union Territory instead of one. |
