Own Your Plant competition, 1663rd Tree Talk organise by GCW Gandhi Nagar

Jammu, Nov 13: A Green initiative to inspire urban greening and environmental awareness was organised by Department of Botany, PSPS Government College for Women, Gandhi Nagar Jammu under the patronage of Principal, GCW Gandhi Nagar, Jammu, Prof. Geetanjali Andotra and under the supervision of Prof. Shivani Sharma, Head, Department of Botany.
Honourable Vice Chancellor, Cluster University of Jammu, Prof. K.S Chandersekar was the chief guest of the event while Worthy Principal, GCW Gandhi Nagar, Jammu was the guest of honour. Sh. Om Parkash Sharma ‘Vidhyarthi’ (IFS), former Principal Chief Conservator Forest was the main resource person who conducted 1663rd tree talk session.
During the tree talk, Sh. Vidhyarthi enlightened the students and teaching fraternity regarding the local flora of Jammu and spread a strong message among the college students about plantation and preservation of local flora of medicinal and aesthetic value. He also raised awareness about the vital role of plants in sustaining life on Earth and the collective responsibility of every citizen to preserve biodiversity. Prof. Vijay Chandan (Retd.) a tree talk enthusiast displayed several plant parts of edible, medicinal and aesthetic value. He also displayed garlands of different plants including Coix lacryma and Pavetta indica etc and presented the garland of Coix lacryma (Vajayanti mala) to the esteemed chief guest.
Special invitee and herbal innovator, Ms. Pooja Suri, demonstrated innovative cuisines from Papaya plant including pudding, ladoos and paranthas on occasion of National Indian Pudding Day.
An innovative competition "Own Your Plant" was organised by the department in which each student deposited one plant of economic value to the green house of the department, showcasing their plant care efforts and environmental awareness. Around 100 enthusiastic students participated in the Tree Talk session cum competition wherein the First prize was won by Bhoomika Rajput and second by Mehak of B.Sc Sem-III. Certificate of appreciation were given to all the participants.
The Department of Botany extended heartfelt thanks to Sh. O.P. Sharma Vidhyarthi for his valuable contribution and inspirational address. The program was the cohesive effort of all the teaching and non-teaching members of the Deptt. of Botany. Prof. Swarn Singh, Prof. Rupali Nanda, Dr. Vinod Verma, Dr. Anu Sharma, Dr. Arti Manhas and Dr. Mohd. Asif Choudhary attended the program and played a key role in making it a grand success.
