During the past few years’ the government has undertaken a series of transformative reforms to enhance access, quality and relevance in higher education across Jammu and Kashmir. These reforms have directly benefited the colleges and varsities across the Union Territory. University of Jammu has grown from strength to strength and today it stands as a beacon of learning with 11 off-site campuses, 40 academic departments and over 160 affiliated colleges, serving the educational aspirations of students across the region. Its NAAC A++ accreditation with a CGPA of 3.72, is an achievement and the JU figures among the top 100 universities in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF). It’s not the Jammu University only that has scaled new heights during the past few years, all varsities in Jammu and Kashmir have secured one or other milestone. The trend in the higher educational institutions has changed as the University’s focus on employability through job fairs and global placement drives, including partnerships with international organisations reflect a forward-looking approach that ensures education translates into meaningful career opportunities. Universities besides providing degrees to the students are making them employable by honing their skills. Higher education is no more about classroom teaching, it’s now more about how to prepare youngsters to face the world so that they can eke out their living. The synergy between policy direction and institutional reform has created an environment conducive to creativity, inclusiveness, and employability. The government’s focus on holistic education through the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 has further revitalized the higher education system. The policy’s emphasis on multidisciplinary learning, research, and flexible curricula is now being reflected in the way institutions across J&K are designing their academic frameworks. Higher education in Jammu and Kashmir today stands at a defining juncture. It is moving beyond degrees and classrooms towards shaping future-ready citizens—individuals who are skilled, socially conscious, and globally competitive. This shift in focus, from rote learning to real-world preparedness, marks a significant leap forward. If the momentum continues, Jammu and Kashmir could soon become an educational hub of North India, not only producing graduates but nurturing innovators, thinkers, and nation-builders—fulfilling the true purpose of higher education. The higher education moving to new heights in the region is a big achievement and it needs to be highlighted and showcased at every platform. |
