Early Times Report JAMMU, Nov 16: On the occasion of National Press Day, BJP spokesperson Balbir Ram Rattan highlighted the crucial role of the media in strengthening democracy, emphasizing that the "fourth pillar" remains incomplete unless it truly reflects the voice of the people. Rattan said that democracy draws its strength not merely from elections, institutions, or policy-making, but from the active participation of citizens. He noted that the media serves as the most powerful medium for this participation, as it brings citizens' issues, aspirations, and challenges before the government, administration, and society at large. He observed that the modern era, marked by rapid developments in information and technology, places greater responsibility on the media to maintain credibility, transparency, and accountability. According to him, the "fourth pillar" of democracy becomes truly effective only when it not only questions those in power but also amplifies the concerns of ordinary citizens. Extending greetings to journalists and media persons on National Press Day, Rattan encouraged them to pay greater attention to issues affecting rural and far-flung populations, marginalized communities, youth, and women, whose voices often go unheard in mainstream platforms. The true picture of society emerges only when every section's views are represented without hesitation, he said. He also underlined the importance of public participation, urging citizens to proactively bring their issues to the media so that the democratic dialogue remains vibrant. The media and the people complement each other. Only when both work together does democracy become secure, capable, and accountable. Expressing optimism, Rattan said he hopes the media and society will continue to work hand in hand to nurture a more aware, sensitive, and inclusive democratic environment-one where no voice is overlooked and every story finds its place. |
