| Centre likely to hold fresh talks with Ladakh groups after winter session | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Dec 1: The Union Home Ministry is expected to convene another round of dialogue with agitating groups from Ladakh after the conclusion of the ongoing Winter Session of Parliament. The move comes after the ministry received a detailed 29-page charter of demands outlining the political, administrative, and constitutional aspirations of the people of Ladakh. Official sources said the document submitted by Ladakh’s joint agitation committees is currently under thorough examination by senior officials of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). The ministry is likely to place its considered opinion on each of the key demands before the next round of formal engagement. The charter reportedly includes demands related to statehood for Ladakh, constitutional safeguards under the Sixth Schedule, protection of land and jobs, and greater autonomous powers to address the region’s unique tribal and socio-cultural identity. It also highlights concerns over environmental vulnerability, the impact of rapid infrastructural development, and the need for institutional mechanisms to safeguard local interests. The last official meeting between the Ladakh agitation leaders and MHA representatives was held on October 22, during which the Centre had sought a comprehensive written document listing all demands, assurances and expectations. The submission of the 29-page charter marked the completion of that process. Sources indicated that the next round of talks is likely to be scheduled soon winter session of the Parliament which began today, signalling the Centre’s intention to continue engagement with the stakeholders amid growing political mobilisation in the Union Territory. The upcoming meeting is expected to be crucial in determining the future course of negotiations between Ladakh’s civil society groups and the Central Government. |
