Encounter breaks out in Billawar
1/7/2026 9:51:52 PM
Early Times Report

Jammu, Jan 7: An encounter broke out between terrorists and security forces in the Kamadh Nullah area of Billawar in Kathua district on Wednesday evening after militants opened fire on a search party of the Special Operations Group (SOG) of the Jammu and Kashmir Police.
Officials said security forces had launched a cordon-and-search operation in the area following specific intelligence inputs about the presence of terrorists.
As the search teams moved in, the terrorists fired upon the security personnel, triggering a gunfight.
Despite difficult terrain, dense vegetation and fading light, the search and combing operation continued in the area, officials said.
Inspector General of Police (IGP), Jammu Zone, said in a post on X that the SOG was “relentlessly engaging the terrorists” despite darkness, thick forest cover and treacherous terrain.
He added that teams of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) have also joined the joint operation to strengthen the cordon.
“The operation is ongoing and further details are awaited,” officials said.
The gunfight began in the evening at Kahog village in the Billawar area after security forces launched a search operation based on inputs about the presence of two to three terrorists, officials said. Sources said around three terrorists are reported to be trapped by the security forces.
At around 4 pm, locals spotted a terrorist at Kamad Nallah in the Billawar police station area. They added that the individual could be the same terrorist who was seen earlier in the day at Dhannu Parole. Officials said additional forces have been rushed to the area to neutralise the terrorists.
This is being described as the first terrorist encounter of 2026 and the first major operation of the year. The operation is being personally monitored by IG Jammu and SSP Kathua Mohita Sharma.
Firing is continuing from both sides, and the operation is still underway. Security forces said the situation is being closely monitored and detailed information will be shared shortly.
