| NMOPS J&K holds meeting, demands reinstatement of old pension scheme in upcoming budget session | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Jan 7: The National Movement for Old Pension Scheme (NMOPS), Jammu & Kashmir, today held a significant meeting in a Virtual mode to strongly reiterate its long-pending demand for the reinstatement of the Old Pension Scheme (OPS) for government employees. The meeting was attended by senior leaders, district representatives, and employees from various departments, reflecting the growing unrest and concern among employees over their post-retirement security. Addressing the gathering UT President, NMOPS J&K Sheikh Mohammed Ashraf along with Central Executive Council reminded the Government that the restoration of OPS was a key promise made in various political manifestos, assuring government employees of social and financial security after retirement. The speakers expressed hope that Government fulfill this commitment, due to widespread consensus on the shortcomings of the New Pension Scheme (NPS). The leaders emphasized that the NPS has failed to provide guaranteed social security, exposing employees to market risks and uncertainty. They stated that employees who dedicate their entire lives to public service deserve a dignified, assured, and inflation-protected pension, which only OPS can ensure. The uncertainty attached to NPS has caused anxiety among lakhs of serving employees, particularly in Jammu & Kashmir, where economic vulnerabilities are already high. NMOPS J&K urged the Government to use the upcoming Budget Session as an opportunity to demonstrate its commitment to employees by announcing a clear and concrete decision on the restoration of OPS. The meeting observed that several states across the country have already restored OPS, setting a positive precedent and proving that the scheme is both socially just and administratively feasible. Speakers during the meeting also highlighted that OPS is not a luxury but a right earned through years of dedicated service. They asserted that pension is deferred wages, not charity, and cannot be subjected to speculative market forces. The organization cautioned that ignoring this genuine demand may further alienate employees and adversely impact morale, efficiency, and governance. The NMOPS J&K leadership appealed to all elected representatives, irrespective of political affiliation, to rise above party lines and support the cause of employees. They stressed that the issue of OPS is not political but humanitarian, directly affecting the livelihood and dignity of employees and their families. Concluding the meeting, NMOPS J&K resolved to intensify its peaceful and democratic struggle if the Government fails to take a decisive step in the forthcoming Budget Session. The organization reaffirmed its commitment to continue mobilizing employees and engaging with policymakers until OPS is fully restored. |
