Early Times Report Jammu, Apr 9: Colonel Sonam Wangchuk, a decorated hero of the Kargil War and a recipient of the Maha Vir Chakra, passed away suddenly in Leh, leaving behind a legacy of courage, leadership and distinguished service to the nation. Widely revered for his role during the Kargil conflict, Col. Wangchuk had led a team of 40 soldiers in a daring high-altitude operation, successfully evicting 135 Pakistani troops in a fierce three-day battle fought under extreme conditions, including deep snow and sub-zero temperatures. The mission, conducted at an altitude of nearly 18,000 feet, is regarded as one of the earliest significant successes for Indian forces during the war. His exemplary leadership and bravery during the operation earned him the Maha Vir Chakra. Notably, he was among the first officers to be recommended for a gallantry award while the conflict was still ongoing. Six soldiers from his unit were also honoured with gallantry medals for their role in the mission. After retiring from the Indian Army, Col. Wangchuk settled in Leh. His demise has triggered an outpouring of grief across Ladakh, with people from all walks of life paying heartfelt tributes to the war hero. Among those who paid homage was Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, who expressed deep sorrow over the passing of the decorated officer. In a message, he described Col. Wangchuk as a symbol of courage, sacrifice and national integration, and an enduring inspiration for future generations. “A proud son of Ladakh, he exemplified resilience, steadfastness and an unwavering commitment to the nation. His courageous leadership during Operation Vijay, where he led by personal example under the most demanding high-altitude conditions, continues to inspire,” Singh said, adding that his life remains a testament to bravery and service. Col. Wangchuk is remembered as a fearless soldier and a respected leader whose contributions to the nation will continue to inspire generations. His passing marks a significant loss not only for Ladakh but for the entire country. |
