Early Times Report

Jammu, Apr 9: Signs of unease are growing within the Jammu and Kashmir unit of the Indian National Congress, with several leaders reportedly approaching the party high command to seek permission to openly oppose policies of the National Conference-led government in the Union Territory.
Highly placed sources said that senior Congress functionaries have conveyed their “deep frustration” over what they described as a lack of political space and consultation within the coalition arrangement. According to them, the alliance with the National Conference exists largely on paper, as key policy decisions and governance matters are allegedly being handled unilaterally without taking Congress leaders into confidence.
Sources revealed that the local Congress leadership has urged the high command to allow them greater political flexibility, including the option to publicly “oppose and expose” the National Conference on governance issues. Importantly, they are said to have suggested that such opposition could be carried out without formally withdrawing support from the coalition, thereby maintaining the arrangement while asserting their independent political identity.
At present, Congress leaders in Jammu and Kashmir have largely directed their criticism towards the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance government at the Centre, and have generally refrained from directly targeting their coalition partner in the Union Territory. This calibrated approach, however, appears to be under strain amid mounting pressure from party workers and the public.
Leaders have reportedly informed the high command that they are increasingly being held accountable by the electorate for the perceived shortcomings of the coalition government, including its failure to fulfil key election promises. This, they argue, has put them in a politically vulnerable position—caught between remaining loyal to the alliance and responding to public dissatisfaction.
Sources added that grassroots workers have also been voicing concerns over the party’s diminishing visibility and influence in governance, warning that continued silence could further erode the Congress’s support base in the region. The leadership is said to be weighing its options carefully, as any shift in strategy could have significant implications for the stability of the coalition as well as the party’s political positioning in Jammu and Kashmir.
While there has been no official statement from either party so far, the developments indicate rising tensions within the alliance and hint at possible recalibration of political strategies in the coming weeks.
