| Amid reshuffle buzz, Karra appoints loyalists as district observers, coordinators | | |  Early Times Report
Jammu, May 7: Amid growing speculation over an impending organisational reshuffle in the Jammu and Kashmir Congress, Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) president Tariq Hameed Karra on Thursday appointed a large number of party leaders as district observers and coordinators across the Union Territory, a move being viewed by insiders as an attempt to strengthen his support base within the organisation.
According to the list issued by the party, as many as 116 leaders have been appointed as observers and coordinators for 21 organisational districts of Jammu and Kashmir. While the Union Territory officially comprises 20 districts, the Congress organisational structure treats Jammu Urban and Jammu Rural as separate districts, taking the total count to 21.
Highly placed party sources said the appointments were largely aimed at accommodating Karra’s loyalists at a time when discussions about a possible reshuffle in the JKPCC have intensified.
“District observers and coordinators were already functioning in most districts. The latest exercise mainly involved adjustments and fresh appointments to accommodate leaders close to the present leadership,” a senior Congress leader said on condition of anonymity.
Sources claimed the move assumes significance as the Congress high command is reportedly considering changes in the party’s organisational setup in Jammu and Kashmir following the completion of Assembly elections in four states and one Union Territory.
The Congress unit in Jammu and Kashmir has been witnessing internal turbulence for several months, with a section of dissident leaders openly expressing dissatisfaction with the functioning of the present JKPCC leadership headed by Karra.
Party insiders said the central leadership had earlier planned a reorganisation of the J&K unit to address factionalism and internal dissent, but the process was delayed due to the Assembly elections in several states.
“With the elections now over, the party leadership is expected to revisit the issue of organisational restructuring in Jammu and Kashmir,” sources said. “Efforts are also being made to balance various factions and give representation to dissenting groups.”
The anticipated reshuffle is being viewed as part of a larger strategy by the Congress high command to restore unity within the party and strengthen its organisational structure in the Union Territory ahead of future political challenges.
In recent weeks, the party leadership has also attempted to reach out to dissident leaders by assigning them important organisational responsibilities at the national level.
Senior Congress leader Vikar Rasool Wani was recently appointed as an All India Congress Committee (AICC) observer for the Sangathan Srijan Abhiyan in Delhi, while another dissident leader, Karan Bhagat, was elevated as National Coordinator of the Scheduled Caste wing of the party on April 23.
Political observers believe these appointments indicate the Congress leadership’s attempt to strike a balance between rival factions while preparing the ground for broader organisational changes in Jammu and Kashmir.
Although no official confirmation regarding a reshuffle has been issued so far, party sources indicated that changes in the present organisational setup could take place in the coming weeks as the leadership seeks to consolidate the party and contain growing factionalism within the J&K Congress unit. |
