CHANDIGARH, May 27: Panjab University teachers and administrative officials on Wednesday observed a 'vehicle-free day' on the campus here in the wake of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's appeal to cut down fuel consumption.
PU officials either reached their respective offices on foot or by bicycle. Last week, the Chandigarh administration observed 'no vehicle day' after the Punjab Governor and Chandigarh administrator Gulab Chand Kataria asked officials to avoid using four-wheelers every Wednesday and instead use public transport, electric vehicles, bicycles, and other alternative means of transport.
The PU authorities said the 'vehicle-free day' initiative was carried out under the guidance of University's Vice Chancellor Renu Vig, Registrar Yajvender Pal Verma, and NSS Programme Coordinator Anupam Bahri.
The initiative follows the meeting of University Officers chaired by the VC to encourage students, teaching and non-teaching employees to refrain from using personal vehicles every Wednesday and instead utilise the free shuttle bus and e-rickshaw facilities available within the campus.
Vig thanked the participants in the day-long drive despite scorching heat and harsh weather, according to a PU statement. She informed that feedback is being taken from all stakeholders to make the initiative more successful and participative in upcoming Wednesdays.
The volunteers of the National Service Scheme (NSS), Panjab University, actively participated in the awareness drive and motivated students, faculty members, employees, and visitors to adopt eco-friendly modes of transportation.
