| Congress crisis deepens, Delhi summons warring leaders | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, May 31: Amid escalating infighting within the Jammu and Kashmir unit of the Congress and growing differences over the party's alliance with the ruling National Conference (NC), the Congress high command has summoned senior party leaders from the Union Territory to New Delhi for discussions aimed at resolving the crisis. Highly placed sources said the meeting is likely to be held after the swearing-in of the newly appointed Chief Minister of Karnataka. According to party insiders, with the Congress leadership having successfully navigated the leadership issue in Karnataka, it is now turning its attention to addressing organizational discord in Jammu and Kashmir. “The party leadership is keen to end factionalism in the J&K Congress and has called leaders from both camps to Delhi to iron out their differences,” sources said. The intervention by the central leadership comes in the wake of growing factionalism, with rival groups within the party reportedly holding parallel meetings and publicly airing their grievances. The internal tensions have also been fueled by differing views on the Congress-NC alliance, which some leaders believe has adversely affected the party’s political standing in Jammu and Kashmir. Sources said several dissident leaders and workers have approached Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, seeking his intervention in what they describe as a deepening organizational crisis and a widening disconnect between various factions within the party. A section of party leaders has reportedly expressed reservations over the coalition strategy with the National Conference, arguing that the alliance has weakened the Congress’ independent political base in the region. Concerns have also been raised regarding the functioning of Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) chief Tariq Hameed Karra, with some leaders alleging that important decisions are being taken unilaterally and that senior members, particularly from the Jammu region, are being sidelined. Party sources indicated that the Congress high command is expected to hold separate interactions with leaders from different factions in an effort to address grievances, restore unity, and strengthen the organization ahead of upcoming electoral challenges. The Delhi meeting is being viewed as a crucial exercise by the party leadership to contain internal divisions and ensure a united front in Jammu and Kashmir. |
