| NC protest for restoration of statehood at Jantar Mantar shall be eye -opener for the Modi Govt: RL Gupta | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, June 18: The Jammu and Kashmir National Conference Provincial President Jammu Rattan Lal Gupta said that the protest organized by the National Conference at Jantar Mantar on first day of Monsoon session of Parliament for the restoration of Statehood to Jammu and Kashmir should serve as an eye-opener for the Modi Government. The protest has once again highlighted serious concerns regarding the federal structure of the country and the democratic rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. Issued a Statement at Sher-e- Kashmir Bhavan, Jammu today Rattan Lal Gupta said that the Jammu and Kashmir, a historic and beautiful State of the Union of India, was first bifurcated into two parts-Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh-and subsequently reduced to a Union Territory. This decision was taken without the consent of the people and their elected representatives. Such an unprecedented step has no parallel in the history of independent India, where a full-fledged State was downgraded into a Union Territory. The people of Jammu and Kashmir continue to feel that this decision was arbitrary, unjustified, and against the spirit of democracy and federalism enshrined in the Constitution. The prolonged denial of Statehood has weakened democratic institutions and deprived the people of their rightful powers and privileges enjoyed by citizens of other States, Mr Gupta. The participation of National Conference legislators at Jantar Mantar reflects the strong sentiment of the people of Jammu and Kashmir for the immediate restoration of Statehood. The peaceful and democratic protest is a reminder to the Centre that the aspirations and mandate of the people cannot be ignored indefinitely. The Government of India must respect the democratic verdict of the people, honour its repeated commitments regarding Statehood restoration, and take immediate steps to restore full Statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. This alone will strengthen democracy, uphold federal principles, and help in addressing the aspirations of the people. |
