Early Times Report JAMMU, Sept 11: In a significant milestone, the Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS), AIIMS Jammu, has successfully performed the institute's first carotid endarterectomy, marking an important advancement in the availability of complex vascular surgical procedures at the institute. The landmark procedure was performed on a 69-year-old male patient diagnosed with severe 90% stenosis of the right internal carotid artery. The patient had a previous history of middle cerebral artery (MCA) infarction with seizures, making careful neurological and vascular assessment particularly important. Considering the severity of carotid artery narrowing and the patient's clinical history, he was evaluated and taken up for carotid endarterectomy. The procedure involved meticulous exposure of the carotid vessels and surgical removal of the obstructive atherosclerotic plaque from the right internal carotid artery, thereby improving blood flow through the affected vessel. The case required careful preoperative evaluation, precise surgical technique, meticulous anaesthetic management and close postoperative neurological monitoring. Carotid endarterectomy is an established surgical procedure for the treatment of significant carotid artery stenosis, in which atherosclerotic plaque causes narrowing of the arteries supplying blood to the brain. Significant carotid artery disease can increase the risk of transient ischaemic attacks and ischaemic stroke. The procedure was successfully performed by the Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS), AIIMS Jammu, under the leadership of Dr. Sartaj Ahmad Guroo, Associate Professor and Officiating Head, Department of CTVS, AIIMS Jammu. The successful completion of the procedure was made possible through close coordination among the CTVS, Anaesthesia, Neurosurgery and ENT teams, along with Operation Theatre personnel, Nursing Officers, Technicians and other supporting staff. Their coordinated efforts, technical expertise and professional commitment contributed significantly to the safe and successful completion of this complex procedure. |
