CM directs traffic cops to stop challans in Kashmir
BJP ministers indifferent towards traffic scenario in Jammu, cops obsessed with challans

Early Times Report
Jammu, Sept 7: Taking cognizance of difficulties and trouble people faced at the hands of traffic cops and police in challan procedures and frisking at check points, Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti today showed concern and directed the Traffic Police to stop such exercise and focus on regulating the traffic in Srinagar until ensuing Eid festival is over. This is contrary to the chaotic scenario in Jammu where no one, including the BJP ministers have ever tried to take a look, leave alone directions to regulate the traffic which is the least priority of the cops over fixing challans entire day.
Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti's directive to Traffic Police and Police department in general has come a great relief to the vehicle owners on roads that will give them some respite from this 'obsessive' exercise of the cops which at times becomes imposing and uncalled for and unwarranted. This routine of prioritizing task of making challans over regulating traffic often results in choked traffic jams on even wider roads and it is this observation that has prompted Chief Minister to give these instructions ahead of Eid that witnesses heavy rush of vehicles.
While there is the concerned Chief Minister whose directions have ensured a 'pleasant break' from the hassles and hardships people were to face in coming days, Jammu remains neglected on this front too, thanks to a battery of unconcerned BJP ministers towards the ever choking scenario on roads here and an 'imposed' exercise of making challans by the cops amid maddening rush of traffic. From Jewel Chowk to BC Road, Rehari crossing to Janipura and New Plot, congested kacchi chowni and Parade area on one side to Vikram Chowk, Panama Chowk and Satwari crossing which remain choked points in the city, besides even posh Residency Road and Shahidi Chowk, traffic cops instead of regulating traffic the cops are seen busy in stopping the scooterists and other vehicle owners entire day.
Come Durbar Move and Jammu turns into police state due to heavy and huge presence of cops on the roads who focus all their energy in stopping the vehicles and making challans, combined with unauthorized money collection (wherever it clicks) and devote very less time towards their prime duty of regulating the smooth flow of traffic. With influx of men and huge number of government and private vehicles in Jammu after Durbar arrives here, winter capital becomes a jungle of heavy traffic on all roads resulting in untold miseries to people.
Reliable sources within the Traffic department said the cops on field duty have been conveyed by their bosses that their performance would be gauged by the number of challans made per day and given specific instructions that each one of them should come up with at least 50 challans….! With no one in the government to check this kind of obsession, will the scenario show any change in coming days.
