Early Times Report
Jammu, June 11: Political tug of war between Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) and People Democratic Party (PDP) has hampered the appointment of two Deputy Inspector Generals (DIGs) of Udhampur-Reasi (UR) and Doda-Ramban-Kishtwar-(DKR) Ranges, with only seventeen days left for the starting of Amarnath Ji Yatra.
"The state government failed to make consensus on the appointment of DIGs for Udhampur-Reasi Range and Doda-Ramban-Kishtwar Range", said sources adding that difference between the ruling partners had jeopardized the appointments of the Range heads.
"The Amarnath Ji Yatra has to pass through Udhampur district of the Udhampur-Reasi Range and Ramban District of the Doda-Ramban-Kishtwar (DKR) Range", said a police official and both the Ranges are vacant for long, leaving the vulnerable areas headless.
"Missing of supervisory officials increases threat perceptions and that too at the time of Amarnath Ji Yatra as the pilfrims have been attacked twice in the recent past.
The post of DIG Udhampur-Reasi range fell vacant after DIG Varinder Sharma retired from the post on December 31 last year after attaining the age of superannuation while the post DIG Doda-Ramban-Kishtwar is lying vacant after the promotion of the former DIG.
It is pertinent to mention here that a civilian was killed and three security personnel critically injured after suspected terrorists attacked a military camp on the Jammu-Srinagar highway on June 13 of 2016 and the militant who was on board a bus and opened fire the moment the vehicle reached a Central Reserve Police Force check post in Udhampur District. The bullets injured three jawans and a female passenger, who succumbed to her injuries later however the militant was also neutralized in the operation.
Meanwhile, on August 5 of 2015, a militant was caught alive after a terrorist attack on a BSF convoy that was travelling on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway in Udhampur.
