As NC president refuses to come out of 'shock', party morale hits all time low
Further delay in distribution of mandates

SRINAGAR, Aug 14: National Conference President, Dr. Farooq Abdullah is yet to come out of the shock which he received in the form of defeat in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections from the Srinagar-Budgam Parliamentary seat. Dr. Abdullah is taking no interest whatsoever in the party affairs and it is his son Omar Abdullah who is calling the shots.
The NC President has kept himself aloof from the distribution of mandates for the upcoming Assembly elections in the state. This too has provided a platform for the critics to dissect the performance of National Conference in the recent past.
Sources told Early Times that the basic reason for disillusionment of Dr. Abdullah is that there is no safe seat for him where he could fight the elections and win the seat as well. He has accepted the reality that time has gone when people would cast votes for his party irrespective of their performance in the near past.
"There was a time when National Conference stalwarts had options to choose as far as fighting of elections is concerned. Most of the time they would contest from more than one seat and register victory as well. However, things have changed drastically with people registering their protest against the National Conference and its candidates," said sources.
Sources said that Dr. Abdullah like his father Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah always considered Ganderbal as a safe bastion for National Conference. It was due to this reason that Omar too fought his first Assembly election from this seat in 2002. However, he lost the election to Qazi Mohammad Afzal of PDP and from that day it became clear that NC can even lose from its strongholds in the Kashmir valley.
"The National Conference President is in a shock these days and he refuses to come out of it. He in his wildest of dreams had not anticipated his defeat in a Parliamentary election from Srinagar. After the defeat Dr. Abdullah came to know that Srinagar is no longer safe for his party and at the same moment he decided not to contest the Assembly elections this time around," said sources.
It would be in place to mention here that Omar Abdullah had some time back said that his father, Dr. Farooq Abdullah would not contest the Assembly elections. This came as a shock to the party workers who said that Omar should not have made the statement well before the elections more so after the drubbing in the Parliamentary elections.
Importantly, National Conference is yet to take any decision on distribution of mandates on around 40 seats spread across the state. Differences among the probables have come out in the open and this has resulted in delay in this whole process.
The recent statement of veteran NC leader Abdul Rashid Shaheen that Dr. Abdullah and Omar have virtually decimated the party principles and ideals have dealt a severe blow to the chances of party in Assembly elections. Since then Shaheen has resigned from the party thus causing more embarrassment to the party leadership.
