Congress high command comes to Omar's rescue again | | | Mustansir SRINAGAR, Aug 14: Putting all speculations to rest about pulling out of the coalition Government in J&K, the Congress high command has directed the state not to disturb the Omar Abdullah Government till elections are held in the state. Earlier the State Congress had reported the unease persisting between the coalition partners to the party high command in New Delhi and had asked them to take a call on whether to continue the coalition Government with NC or not. However, highly placed sources told Early Times on Thursday that the Congress high command has directed the state unit not to withdraw support to Omar Abdullah led Government and continue with it till elections are held to the state legislature later this year. Sources said though the PCC president, Professor Saif-ud-Din Soz hurt by the decision of National Conference (NC) not to attend the meeting of NC-Congress Coalition Coordination Committee under his chairmanship, tried his level best to convince the high command but to no avail. Sources said that Congress high command rejected the idea of withdrawing support to Omar at this stage when election to the state Assembly are around the corner. "Withdrawal of support to Omar at the last stage of his term will not be appropriate," sources quoted AICC vice president, Rahul Gandhi as having conveyed to Soz. They said that soon after the decision was conveyed to Soz by the high command on Tuesday, political secretary to Congress president Sonia Gandhi, telephonically directed senior Congress leader and Minister for Health and Medical Education, Taj Mohi-ud-Din to diffuse the situation. "It was in this backdrop that Taj told media that the Cabinet meeting could not take place because Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah was having a tight schedule. They said that Soz was asked to pacify the agitating Congress Ministers and let the Government function normally in the state. However, sources said the Congress Ministers from Jammu region wanted pull out of the coalition on the issue of rehabilitation of West Pakistan refugees as a face saving. Pertinently the coalition Government had reached a new low on Monday last with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah cancelling the meeting of the body meant to appoint the members and chairman of State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) after Congress expressed its reservations on attending the meeting. Earlier, the PCC president had put the blame of "governance deficit" squarely on NC after which the NC leaders decided not to attend the meeting of the coordination committee of the coalition Government headed by the former. NC abstained to protest against the statement made by Soz at Kathua on last Saturday that Congress suffered a humiliating defeat in the Parliamentary polls due to the "mis-governance of NC. |
