Delay in extension to Kalith firing range affecting Army's operational capabilities | | | Jammu, Aug 14: A senior officer of the Indian army Thursday exposed the real face of the state govt by coming on record and claiming that the delay on the part of the state govt is adversely affecting the operational capability of the Indian army and any further delay would impact their fighting skills. While interacting with the media persons at the sidelines of 'Mission Hum Safar' to clear range from explosives at Kalith Field Firing range, Brigadier R S Bhathuria said, the Indian army has stopped conducting routine practice exercises at the Kalith Field Firing range as the 10 year long lease period got expired in June 2014. He said despite due request regarding the extension to the state government prior to the expiry of the lease of field area, the state government yet has not granted extension to the Indian army to continue with their training schedule without any stoppage. "Most of the army units deployed in Jammu region under the command of 16 Corps Headquarters carry out their routine training exercise in the Kalith Field Firing range spread over 8000 acres of land, Brig Bathuria added. Commenting on the undue delay caused in clearing the lease, Brigadier Bathuria also claimed that since June we (Army) have wasted 2-3 months but we can make up for the losses if any further delay is caused then it is bound to impact the operational capability of army units. It may be mentioned that Army is using the Kalith Field Firing Range (KFFR) since 1970 for firing of Infantry and Artillery weapon systems and never has faced resistance any from the state government. Pertinently the Indian Army also had faced similar crisis situation when local residents in Kashmir valley had objected to the extension given to Tosha Maidan firing range |
