SRINAGAR, Feb 14 : The announcement of the government that schools in Kashmir valley will reopen after winter vacations on February 23 may not be feasible as the flood affected schools have not been repaired or reconstructed so for.The parents of the school going children of Srinagar district have expressed their reservations saying that most of the flood damaged schools may prove fatal for their children. The schools which aren't concrete pose even greater risk to the children. "We have seen in the past as well how the government promises work on the ground. Their claims that everything will be alright before February 23 are not going to prove correct. I am unable to decide whether to send my children to school or not," said Showkat Ahmad, a parent.Showkat said that authorities didn't take any step that would have infused confidence into the parents and in the students as well. In fact the schools of the district have not been considered either for reconstruction or for the repairs and one is not sure when these schools are going to collapse, said Showkat. There are various schools in the district Srinagar alone which are unsafe given the damage done by the devastating floods of September 2014. How are the students going to make it to the schools who were asked to sit at homes due to the flood impact on their schools?"My children haven't visited their school, not even once, ever since the flood struck the valley because they were told that the things aren't favourable. When nothing has been done to improve the condition of the school, where will they go on February 23," said Bilal Ahmad, another parent. For parents like Bilal, sending the children to their schools will be equal to taking chances because the condition of the flood hit schools depicts so. Not to talk of government schools, even the premier institutions of the valley like the Tyndale Biscoe, Mallinson, Burnhall and DPS Athwajan are in a sorry condition, extracting no interest from the children as well as from the students.Chief Education Officer (CEO) Srinagar, Farooq Ahmad Dar, while talking on the issue said the authorities were not sleeping after the floods. He said that most of the flood hit schools have repaired and will be functional by February 23.When asked that what about the schools not fit for academic activities, he said, "Of 222 flood affected schools in the district Srinagar, 101 are ready for learning process. The students of the rest of the schools will be accommodated in the rented buildings and the ZEOs have been authorized to look for these accommodations. "On being asked when the damaged schools will be reconstructed, he said "We have sent a detailed project report to Governor, N N Vohra and after getting the required financial assistance, the construction work of these schools will be taken in hand."
