Search for Jammu University VC narrows down!

Early Times Report
JAMMU, Feb 23: Despite seemingly making knee deep efforts to impress leadership of both BJP and its student wing ABVP, acting Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof. R.D.Sharma is unlikely to be assigned task of looking after Jammu University for next three years.
Short-listing of ex-ABVP leader and one of the most experienced as well as regular faculty member of Physics department Prof. Naresh Padha alongwith mutely working Prof Kuldeep Sharma of Zoology Department and the only non-controversial face of Jammu University Prof. Deshbandhu Gupta who is Director Colleges Development Council (CDC) has dwindled chances of Sharma being appointed as permanent Vice-Chancellor of Jammu University.
If the sources are to be believed, candidature of Sharma who served as Chairman of Jammu and Kashmir Board of Professional Entrance Examination (J&KBOPEE) during the erstwhile NC-Congress coalition government is being backed by Member Parliament and Minister in the Prime Minister's office Dr. Jitendra Singh and a top National Conference (NC) leader as well as senior Jammu based Congress leader who lost the recently held assembly elections.
Whether or not, Sharma has sought their support or they are behind him on their own could not be confirmed, since Prof. R.D.Sharma despite being repeatedly rung up did not pick up the call. The three political proposers, whose name is there in the public domain, too could not be contacted for being busy in their personal functions. But sources asserted that Sharma has managed solid support of these three individuals apart from having the silent approval of Prof. Amitabh Mattoo, ex-VC of Jammu University and presently, a close aide of PDP Patron Mufti Mohammed Sayeed.
They further said that Sharma has to his credit the administrative experience of having served in BOPEE as its chairman. But what makes his case weak is his over-active and dictatorial style of functioning with the same team of officers who ran the university during the ex-VC Prof. Mohan Pal Singh Isher's tenure, say the administrative sources. They added that the same team which advised Isher and managed his consent on various administrative issues is now seen sipping cups of coffee with acting VC Prof. R.D.Sharma and cursing the ex-VC.
Sharma recently removed seniormost faculty member Prof. Archana Kesar from the headship of Dogri department, levelling allegations of having breached trust by allegedly leaking a purportedly confidential letter. If sources are to be believed, Sharma while removing Kesar from the headship of Dogri department forgot that in the era of Right to Information (RTI), whichever Kesar approaches is unlikely to accept his version of a complaint letter being confidential.
They added that the letter which Sharma claimed to have been leaked by Kesar contained serious allegations on another faculty member of the Dogri department who was also removed from the headship by ex-VC Prof. Mohan Pal Singh Isher. According to Prof. Archana Kesar, she had written a letter to the Controller Examination Prof. Keshav Sharma on December 24, 2014 seeking directions on the fate of answer scripts checked by the same ex-HOD wherein she had found three different handwritings. She wanted the scripts to be sent to forensic laboratory to find out the truth.
But in a surprise move, the acting VC removed her from the headship of Dogri department while the PRO Vinay Thusoo did the rest by writing a derogatory handout in which he claimed that an explanation had been sought from Kesar but she failed to respond. Kesar while talking to Early Times said that she had responded to the letter of Registrar in detail. She added that four questions had been asked and she had given point wise and detailed reply of all. Kesar further said that she was shocked at what media had been told about the whole issue.
This controversy has badly dented chances of Sharma since in the era of RTI; he has removed a seniormost faculty member for allegedly leaking information which otherwise anyone could have got by simply filing an RTI, a charge which Kesar has been denying vehemently. "I am meeting Governor and I will apprise him of the dictatorial ways of Prof. R.D.Sharma. How did he come to know about letter having got leaked from my side? Even the office where I lodged the complaint could have leaked the letter. I am being penalised for no reason," added Kesar.
Not only this controversy, sources maintain that Sharma has taken on highest research scholars body JURSEA and is making knee deep efforts to get all the duly elected office bearers removed. He recently suspended a research scholar who had raised the issue of triple handwriting on the answer scripts, little realizing that in the era of RTI, this is a trivial issue and neither a national secret or a security secret or something which could cause damage to the reputation of the state.
Compared to controversial Prof. R.D.Sharma, Prof. Naresh Padha alongwith Prof Kuldeep Sharma of Zoology Department and Director Colleges Development Council (CDC) Prof. Deshbandhu Gupta are all men of eminence who have remained non-controversial throughout their career, have preferred debate over dictatorial ways, have been continuously serving the university without any break, have not switched over ideologies for their comfort and above all, have an impeccable integrity record.
Whatever three-member Search Committee constituted by the Governor N.N.Vohra and headed by Arun Nagvekar, Ex-Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC), comprising of Prof B.B. Bhattacharya, former Vice-Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and senior IAS officer, R. P.Aggarwal, who has retired as Secretary in the Human Resource Development Ministry decides, the fact remains that JU needs a reformist, modern, forward-looking, flexible, highly qualified and above all man of highest integrity as VC.
