Anantnag, Mar 19: Messy state of health-care could be easily gauged from the fact that a single female doctor is deputed to attend around 150 patients at Maternity and Child Care Hospital Anantnag.
Sources said that the hospital authorities have deputed only a single female doctor for handling the patients in both labor wards and post operative wards of the hospital during night.
"In post operative wards of the hospital 60-70 patients remain admitted every night while as in labour wards 30-40 pregnant women remain admitted. But the hospital authorities depute just a single doctor to look after the patients in both the wards," sources said.
Sources said that at least 14 assistant surgeons and seven gynecologists remain posted in the hospital out of which just a single doctor is deputed for night duty. "The junior doctor on night duty who is supposed to be present in the ward too goes to sleep in her sleeping room thus leaving the patients at the mercy of nursing staff," sources said.
They said that all the delivery cases are conducted by the nurses in labour wards. "More than a dozen normal deliveries take place in the hospital every night and all of them are being handled by the nurses," sources said. They said that the medical superintendent of the hospital has exempted all the senior doctors from night duty.
"MS is also taking the Director Health Services Kashmir for a ride by telling him that two or three doctors are on night duty every night," said a nurse wishing not to be named. She said that the mess in gynecology section of OPD is no less.
"You cannot see even a single doctor reaching OPD before 11 or 11:30 in the morning. Their late arrival only adds to the agonies of pregnant women while waiting for hours in the congested OPD," said another nurse.
Medical Superintendent, Dr Abdul Majid Mirab and Director Health Services, Kashmir Dr Saleem-u-Rehman did not respond to repeated calls.
