Controversy over Dr Kour's humiliation yet to end
3/20/2015 11:30:40 PM
When a woman doctor was humiliated by Lal Singh at an official function and filed a complaint, which was rejected by police,it simply revealed the mindset of , Health Minister. Though the incident is more than eight days old the controversy is yet to end.The incident also speaks volumes about the scare that has been caused among the men of the police, bureaucrats and ministers by Lal Singh because had the complaint been filed by a woman doctor against any other Minister the police would have not rejected the complaint. It is better to mark the contents of the complaint.."I was shocked by the use of harsh words and misbehaviour with me in full public view by none other than Lal Singh, the Minister for Health (at a function here). This has left me mentally harassed and wrecked," Registrar, Psychiatry Diseases Hospital, Jammu, Dr Gurmeet Kour said in her complaint against the BJP minister at police station Bakshi Nagar.."This amounts to outraging the modesty of a lady medical officer in full public view, consequently leading to defamation in public," she said in the complaint. "During a function, Singh publicly shouted at me for not wearing apron and said who has invited you here and snapped his finger at me and further said 'tumhara kaam ho gaya chalo niklo' (your work is over, now go out) Could Lal Singh have enacted the same scene in the Kashmir valley ?Had he done so the entire state would have been on fire.
Well Lal Singh is known for being crude and rude though he is in favour of disciplining the bureaucracy. One does wish to ask him a question. Was it necessary for the woman doctor to wear an apron at a function not connected with the treatment of patients. Dr Gurmeet Kour was not to attend a surgical theatre for performing a surgery, nor was she in her too to listen to the problems of the patients.
Whenever functions, unrelated to treatment of patients, are held within the hospital premises women doctors invariably remain present in elegant garments and that too when the function is to be chaired by the Minister for Health. Dr Gurmeet Kour was under the impression that it was not mandatory for her to wear the apron when she was to attend a ceremonial function. Assuming that Dr Kour had violated certain hospital norms but it was not proper for a the Minister for Health to chide her and to shout at her in full public view. Proper way open for Lal Singh was to admonish her in private. Suppose Lal Singh is humiliated in full public view, will he be able to face people ? Certainly not.He may hide himself in some chamber for days and weeks till he finds the going smooth. Yes, there are many among those who claim to know Lal Singh from close quarters saying that Lal Singh is immune to insults and hence he has no qualm in being rude to others, particularly to the those who are his subordinates. What is amazing and intriguing is the way that no attempt has been made during all these days to defuse the controversy. It could have done by Lal Singh himself. He could have either met the woman doctor and conveyed his regrets or could have issued a statement expressing regrets for his behaviour if it caused any hurt to Dr Kour.He has not done it as was expected from him.Another alternative was for the party leadership to discipline him.Even the Deputy Chief Minister,.Dr Nirmal Singh, could have defused the controversy by having called on Dr Kour and apologized on behalf of Lal Singh.Dr Nirmal Singh could have even talked to Lal Singh about the issue. But he opted for "no comment please" policy because he seems to be as mortally afraid of the Health Minister as Dr Jitendra Singh is.
There could be another aspect of the story.Since majority of the BJP leaders in Jammu have been opposed to Lal Singh's entry into the BJP and had campaigned against him getting the party mandate and against getting inducted in the cabinet the BJP leaders preferred to remain silent so that Lal Singh could trigger bigger controversies which would force the party high command to throw him out.
And the PDP leadership too adopted silence on the issue. Chief Minister, Mufti Mohd. Sayeed, could have intervened and asked Lal Singh to avoiud inviting controversies not for only himself but for the coalition Government. He has not done so because he is fully aware of the temperament of Lal Singh. No wonder if the PDP leaders enjoy the ongoing controversy over humiliation of Dr Kour.Thank God that medicos have not implementged their threat of qutting enmass and had they started implementing their threat it could have kicked up a major controversy threatening the very survival of the coalition rule.Let now Mufti Sayeed and top BJP leaders intervene and defuse the crisis in the interest of political stability.
