Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Mar 20: National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) has turned out to be a subsidiary of East India Company in the state as the Corporation has shut doors for the locals who work on their power projects in the Kashmir valley.
Sources told Early Tines that locals of Uri and Gurez, who are working in the power projects of NHPC, are up in the arms against the authorities for being shown the door. So for hundreds of local employees have been shown the door and there are chances that many more such orders may be issued. "Locals who have been working in the power projects of the corporation for decades now have become a victim of the nefarious policies of the corporation and they are being deliberately deprived of their livelihood," said sources.
Sources said the local employees including the educated ones were convinced with their work in the Kishanganga power project in Gurez area of Bandipora district, which is a multi-billion project of the corporation. "This project used to be the soul igniting place for the local employees but as ill luck would have it, the authorities have become merciless who no longer want the local employees to work in the project. Even the people from the other parts of the district were earning their livelihood from the project but most of them have lost the jobs as the authorities don't want them to work there now," said sources. Sources said the situation for the local employees in Uri in Baramulla district is also not favourable either as they are also bearing the brunt of the highhandedness of NHPC. The local employees have lost the job despite providing land for the power project.
"The Corporation prefers the outsiders over the local workers despite the fact that locals have provided the land for the power project. People of 30 villages who had provided the land for the project have not paid been paid the compensation even after the passing of many decades," said sources.
It is not for the first time that NHPC has been leveled with serious allegations by the locals, but it has happened in the past as well. The locals have been alleging that NHPC has failed to keep the promises which it made prior to the start of the work on these projects," said sources.
