SRINAGAR, Jun 21: Even as the valley seems all set for a catastrophe, the government seem totally unaware of the dangers that are in store for the people.
The glaciers, experts believe are melting at an alarming pace and this can prove disastrous for the valley. The government, however, is yet to count how many glaciers exist in Kashmir and how many are melting.
The Thajiwas Glacier in Sonamarg and the Kolahai in Pahalgam are melting fast. A few years ago, a portion of the Thagiwas glacier also gave way. Experts then said the glacier faced possible doom. However, no preventive measures have been taken till date and tourists continue to throng the glacier in large numbers.
An official of the Ecology and Enviornment Department admitted that the glaciers have been melting since the past fifteen years. However, according to him, the government has no plan to preserve and protect the glaciers.
"We are yet to know the number of glaciers present in the state since there are many untapped glaciers", he added.
Shockingly, he said, the government (the department does not know how many glaciers exist in Kashmir.
Noted Geologists Shakil Ramshoo has done survey on his own without government assistance. In his survey, he has stated that Kashmir glaciers are shrinking due to rise in temperature.
He said the melting of Kashmir glaciers could have serious fallout as most Kashmiris rely on glaciers for water.
The survey says the temperature is projected to increase from 0.9 +/- 0.6 degree Celsius to 2.6 +/- 0.7degree Celsius by 2030.
The survey urges the government to ban the fuel driven vehicles in environment fragile places to restrict melting of glaciers.
A noted environmentalist said government has failed to take measures in preserving glaciers which are melting at the fast rate.
According to him, the emission of huge hydrocarbons at tourist destination was one of the reasons for the melting of glaciers.
Minister of State for Forests and Environment, Abdul Majeed Padroo assured proper action for preservation of the glaciers.
